Blood donation is a noble act that contributes to saving thousands of lives without causing harm to donor. Every year Abu Dhabi Blood Bank supplies more than 15000 units of blood (a total of over 25000 blood products) to help save the lives of patients, one of them may be your family member!
Each unit of donated blood saves the lives of three people, as each unit of blood can be separated into several components (Red /blood Cells, Plasma, Platelets and Cryoprecipitate). The United Arab Emirates is lucky to have a central system for the collection and distribution of blood and blood products for all hospitals in the country.
Any healthy adult male or female between the age of 18 – 65 years, who weights at least 50kg and is not under a doctor’s care for any serious problem, can be a donor.
Any person who needs blood will benefit from the blood unit you donate; such as:
- Accidents victims
- Fire victims
- Anemia patients (Thalassemia and Sickle Cell disease)
- Patients with bleeding disorders (Haemophilia)
- Patients undergoing surgeries
- Cancer Patients
Please note that Abu Dhabi blood bank does not support the practice of direct blood donation because of the risks associated with this practice.
Every 2 to 3 months. So consider being a regular donor!
The blood donation process is totally safe. The health team at Abu Dhabi Blood Bank will assess you to ensure your safety. A little bruise may appear at the pricking point and your body will compensate the volume of blood you have donated in 24 hours. It is not possible to acquire any disease through donating blood because new, disposable, sterilized equipment is used for each donation. A very small number of donors (less than 0.5%) experience slight discomfort during or immediately after donation.
