Abu Dhabi Blood Bank (ADBB), located in the Al Khalidiyah area, is managed by the Laboratory Medicine department of SKMC. Supplying blood 24 hours a day, the ADBB functions as the major blood source for SKMC and the majority of Abu Dhabi’s hospitals. ADBB is open for donations from Sunday to Thursday 07:00 to 21:00 (irrespective of public holidays) and on Saturday 08:00 to 13:00. A staff member is on duty after hours, seven days a week, to issue blood and blood products to hospitals on demand.
ADBB adheres to the most stringent international standards in the handling of blood and blood
products, thereby ensuring the highest levels of patient safety. Highly qualified physicians, nurses, medical technologists, phlebotomists and ancillary staff work tirelessly to make certain that the blood supply in Abu Dhabi is safe and meets the needs of the healthcare community.
To ensure the safety of both the donor and recipient, each donor is examined by a blood bank physician employing a series of questions, close observation and a physical examination. Each unit of donated blood is tested for infectious diseases including, but not limited to, HIV 1&2, HTLV I & II, HBCoreAb, HBsAg, HCV and syphilis.
ADBB also conducts regular blood campaigns in the city and remote areas of the emirate in order to educate and motivate Abu Dhabi’s residents. There are over 200 organizations in Abu Dhabi that participate in these campaigns on a rotating basis.
