 Clinical Dietetics

What is a Dietitian?

Dietitians are the food and nutrition experts who can translate the science of nutrition into practical solutions for healthy living. Registered Dietitians use their nutrition expertise to help individuals make unique, positive lifestyle changes to patients admitted to the hospital, home health care patients and those attending clinics for ongoing nutritional therapy.

Profile of a Dietitian

Our Clinical Dieticians are fully qualified nutrition professionals who apply Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) and lifestyle counseling as a part of their Nutrition Care Process.

MNT involves the assessment of the nutritional status of patients with an illness, diet-related condition, or injury, in order to benefit the patient’s health and reduce costs. Patients are screened for nutritional risk and an assessment of the nutritional status is conducted, before providing the patient with intervention, education and an ongoing monitoring plan for use after discharge of care.

At SKMC dietitians play a significant clinical role, participate in medical rounds, and provide medical nutrition therapy (MNT) for the highest risk patients, intensive care units, staff development, discharge planning and patient education.  In addition, dietitians make a significant contribution in identifying the risk of malnutrition and education focused on the five main chronic diseases risks in the UAE: diabetes, cardiac disease, high blood pressure, anemia and obesity.  Clinical Food Services also provides patient menu planning, food service production, support as well as food and environmental safety inspections.
