 SKMC Holds its Monthly Public Lecture about Obesity on 11 October 2011

Abu Dhabi – UAE: Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), managed by Cleveland Clinic, holds its nineteenth monthly public lecture on Obesity under the title of “Walking Away from Obesity: Options of Bariatric Surgeries and its Potential Complications” on 11 October 2011 at the auditorium of SKMC from 4:30 pm until 5:30 pm. The invitation is extended to all patients and the public. SKMC is part of the SEHA HealthSystem and is owned and operated by Abu Dhabi Health Services Company PJSC (SEHA), which is responsible for the curative activities of all the public hospitals and clinics in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
 
The lecture will comprise of a presentation and then a question and answer session. It will cover all essential topics in fighting obesity and promoting a health lifestyle.  Diseases related to obesity will also be discussed. The lecture will be presented by Dr. Abdelrahman Nimeri, Director of the Bariatric & Metabolic Institute – Abu Dhabi of SKMC, and a world –renowned guest speaker from Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Philip SCHAUER, Professor of Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, Chief of Minimally Invasive General Surgery and Director of the Cleveland Clinic Bariatric and Metabolic Institute (BMI).

 

The lecture is intended to raise awareness regarding the dangers of obesity and the benefits of bariatric surgery for those who need one. In addition, the physicians will explain different types of bariatric surgeries that are available at SKMC including Gastric Bypass Surgery, Adjustable Gastric Banding and Sleeve Gastrectomy. Furthermore, it will be an opportunity for those who may be considered to be morbidly obese people to find out about some of the medical and surgical treatments options. No pre-registration is required to attend the presentation and the auditorium`s doors will be open starting from 04:00 pm.

 

Dr. Nimeri stated, “During the one-hour health talk, the presentation will take around 10 minutes and the following 50 minutes will be dedicated to answer the audience’s questions. Attendees might also have the opportunity to meet some of the patients who had a bariatric surgery or are being evaluated to have one. We will be addressing the different types of bariatric surgeries in-depth in this upcoming health talk.”

 

Dr. Schauer of the Cleveland Clinic expressed his eager in participating in this health talk and said, “I am proud to join Abu Dhabi community in such a scientific educational session. Cleveland Clinic and SKMC play an active role in the community by promoting health awareness, disease prevention and encouraging healthy lifestyles.”

 

“The invitation is directed to the public from all ages, and we highly encourage them to attend this gathering, especially obese individuals who have thoughts in undergoing a bariatric surgery,” Dr. Nimeri said.

 

Since Bariatric Surgery started at SKMC in June 2009, 200 bariatric surgeries were successfully performed for patients who had an extended history of obesity and diseases related to obesity such as diabetes and hypertension, and had a Body Mass Index (BMI) of more than 40 kg/m².
