At SKMC we are committed to quality and excellence. At every step, the staff of the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute will focus on your safety and comfort. We believe you should be thoroughly educated about what you are going through, each of your questions should be answered, and you should receive all the support you need to succeed.
Bariatric surgery promotes weight loss through two different methods. The first surgical method makes the stomach smaller and is referred to as a restrictive procedure, because the amount of food that can be eaten is restricted. The second surgical method of surgical weight loss is referred to as a malabsorptive procedure, because the calories absorbed will be less.
The surgical weight loss options we offer at BMI (Abu Dhabi) are:
1. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery: It is a combined restrictive and malabsorptive procedure. It works both by limiting the amount of food that can be eaten and the calories absorbed (58% of procedures done at SKMC).
2. Adjustable gastric banding (LAP-BAND): It is a restrictive surgical procedure and works by limiting
the amount of food that can be eaten, leading to weight loss (4% of procedures done at SKMC).
3. Sleeve gastrectomy: It involves removing part of the stomach in a way to make stomach look like a sleeve, and hence, limiting the amount of food intake (38% of procedures done at SKMC)
Weight loss surgery is just the start of the process. It requires a commitment to change in your life and lots or preparation prior to surgery. To insure that you receive the best service, you will be guided in a total of 11 steps starting by Referral for BMI Abu Dhabi, attending the Monthly Obesity Public lecture and ending with regular check-ups. The steps in-between will involve going through weight loss surgery education, consultation assessments and at the very end having the actual surgery. Please note that all patients are required to have a nutritional and psychological evaluation done at SKMC-Cleveland Clinic.
