SKMC promotes mutual cooperation and collaboration between the general medicine and psychiatric units to offer patients the best care possible. The Behavioral Science Pavilion's Rehabilitation Unit is considered to be the most advanced community unit in the Middle East, with both a day center and half-day accommodation for the rehabilitation of patients.
Services cover all psychiatric and psychological subspecialties, including:
In addition to the Rehabilitation Unit, the BSP has other specialized facilities, tailored to suit the needs of the patient.
Parents who have concerns about their child's behavior, mental abilities, social skills or academic achievements can visit the CAPU for help with the assessment and treatment of the child. Operating mostly as an outpatient clinic, but with an inpatient facility if required, the CAPU's decor has been designed to put the child at ease, allay any fears and most importantly make them feel comfortable before starting their treatment.
The neccesary care for the child is provided in a multi-disciplinary fashion and the Unit has good communication with other organizations and departments that serve children in the community. The Unit accepts referrals from various sources such as public and private hospitals, school clinics and primary health care facilities.
Treating patients in their twilight years, the Geriatric Psychiatry Unit specializes in conditions related to ageing problems such as cognitive deterioration, memory impairment, behavioral disturbances developing in later age of life, as well as all psychiatric disorders related to common age-related conditions like dementia. Most of the treatment administered in this unit is through the Outpatient Clinic, however the unit has a separate male and female ward, where short term patients who are showing signs of disturbance or acute symptoms and require stabilization, can be admitted.
The Chemical Dependancy Unit is highly specialized facility that treats UAE National patients only, who are suffering from various forms of addiction. Patients admitted to the 20 bed unit will receive treatment in two stages; A two week detoxification program aims to remove the narcotic substance from the patient’s blood and requires medical stabilization of withdrawal symptoms. Following this, a one to three month rehabilitation program is designed to prepare the patient for returning to the community, with the strength to stay free from addiction, which is achieved through specialized programs and psychotherapeutic sessions. After discharge, the patient will continue with treatment during regular outpatient follow up sessions.
Mostly an inpatient facility, the Forensic Psychiatry Unit deals with referrals from the police when requiring an assessment of criminal responsibility, as well as treating patients who are in police custody and suffering from acute psychiatric symptoms. This unit is not for public use, and is a shared responsibility of the hospital and the Abu Dhabi Ministry of Interior.
The Liaison Psychiatry Unit is the bridge between the BSP and other health facilities that are under the care of Abu Dhabi’s Health Authority. The Unit helps in diagnosing, treating and following up on inpatients, suffering from psychological issues, based at other hospitals. After the patients are discharged, they continue their psychiatric treatment within BSP’s inpatient or outpatient units.
The unit aims at bridging the gap between the hospital and the community by offering programs to help patients integrate into the community and reduce the risk of relapse. It also provides mental health education and prevention. The Community Psychiatry Unit incorporates a Day Center, Community Case Management Team (CCMT), Hotline services, Crisis Intervention and the Rehabilitation Unit/Outpatient Clinic.
The Day Center offers more than 25 weekly therapy groups, in addition to individualized treatment plans specific to each patient. The CCMT is made up of a psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker and nurse, who together design a comprehensive treatment plan to suit each patient and make regular visits to patients at home.
The Crisis Intervention Team is ready to help in resolving a patient crisis at home or to help in bringing difficult patients to the hospital. The hotline number - +971 2 819 4460 - is open from 07:30 to 15:30.
